6 Useless Google Properties

Google is everyone’s favorite search engine. Not only do they have a high quality search engine but they also have dozens of other properties including YouTube, and iGoogle. Both of the aforementioned properties are among Google’s most useful, but every Google property isn’t as useful. Below is a list of the 6 most useless Google properties.

1. Notebook
Google’s Notebook is a feature that allows you to “clip and collect information as you browse the web.” So essentially it’s like a glorified sticky note? Well not exactly, you can also organize your notes and publish them for anyone to view. Except those features don’t really make this useless tool any more enticing.

2. Web Search Features
First of all, I’m not even sure if this is a property or not. But when you go to the More Google Products page it’s listed. Essentially this page is a list of different features of the normal Google search broken down by category with sample searches.

3. Special Searches
Google’s Special Searches is a feature that allows you to “Use Google to search within specific topics.” But the problem is that most of the topics listed are of any interest to any one. The only special searches that are worth viewing are the Apple and US Government searches. However, these are only worth looking at because they provide additional content besides just a search.

4. Web Accelerator
Who else thinks of NetZero, or another sleazy dial up company, when they hear the phrase web accelerator? Well Google has an accelerator of it’s own, which it claims can “help web pages show up in a snap.” I wonder if it really works or if it’s just another way for Google to track the pages you view. Either way, I have fast DSL so I’m not inclined to test it out.

5. Alterts
Google’s Alerts are “are email updates of the latest relevant Google results (web, news, etc.) based on your choice of query or topic.” This feature could have been useful 3 years ago, but now days with Google’s customizable home page and RSS feeds, who still needs email updates?

6. Picasa
According to Google Picasa is an “easy way to share and manage your photos.” Could it be designed to compete with Yahoo’s Flickr? I doubt it, Picasa is actually a program you have to download and install to use. And honestly, I’d never heard of Picasa before I wrote this blog entry.
